Good win for Donard/Glen Camogie
July 14, 2008
The camogie players from Donard/Glen played old rivals Kiltegan in the Senior Championship in Kiltegan on Sunday 13th July.
Kiltegan had pipped Donard/Glen by a point in the home game back in May but the tables were turned on Sunday with a good win for the Donard girls.
Conditions were perfect if maybe a little too warm for the players in the bright sunshine but nobody dared complain as this game got underway.
Kiltegan opened the scoring with a goal from Edel Wynne and quickly added on a point, Gemma O'Neill for Donard replied with a point from a free and another from play. Kiltegan added on two more points from Mary Byrne and Anne-Marie Doran before Sile Whelan broke through to leave the sliotar in the net - 1-2 to 1-4.
Within minutes Kiltegan did likewise at the other end with Rosanna Keogh scoring their second goal, play was switching from end to end with some super saves being made by Lynsey Walshe in goal for Donard and Catherine Staunton for Kiltegan, when Niamh O'Byrne caught a super ball directly in front of goals and lobbed it into the net.
Half-time score had Kiltegan ahead by 2-4 to 2-2.
Kiltegan opened the scoring in the second half with a free from Anne-Marie Doran while Gemma O'Neill opened the scoring once again for Donard with a point. Points from Sile Whelan, Clair Whelan and Nora O'Neill were replied with points from Karen Furlong and Sinead Fisher but at this stage Donard/Glen were gaining the upper hand in the tackling and blocking with substitute Alva Neary making an instant impact, Roisin Toomey outstanding in defence and Karen Walshe making some searing runs through Kiltegan defence.
Another point from Clair Whelan and one from a free taken by the impressive Gemma O'Neill sealed Kiltegan's fate.
Final score 2-10 to 2-7.
Team for Donard/Glen lined out as follows: Lynsey Walshe, Niamh O'Byrne 1-0, Mary O'Neill, Colette Walshe, Dearbhla O'Byrne, Roisin Toomey, Lindsey Quinlan, Eve Whyte, Sinead Whyte, Clair Whelan 0-2, Karen Walshe, Nora O'Neill 0-1, Sile Whelan 1-1, Breda Walshe, , Gemma O'Neill 0-6, Carmel Whelan for Dearbhla O'Byrne, Alva Neary for Colette Walshe, Mag Whelan for Breda Walshe, Andrea Kealy, Amanda Butler
