Glancy thrilled with historic hurling win

July 11, 2008
Leitrim's Nicky Rackard Cup victory over Fermanagh last Saturday was their first ever in the competition, and afterwards team manager Kevin Glancy hailed it as an historic breakthrough for hurling in the county. Goals from Liam Burns and Colm Hayes inspired Glancy's men to a 2-13 to 1-11 triumph at Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada, and almost certainly assured them of a place in the quarter-finals. "There is a huge amount of work being done by these lads but now we have to prepare even harder for the quarter-finals. I hope the win will raise the profile of hurling in the county," the St. Mary's clubman said. Glancy felt Leitrim had learned a lot from their first round loss to Non Ards (South Down) a week previously. "I think the game against Non Ards definitely helped. It was only seven days ago and our lads were up to the pitch of the championship. "Today was a great game, we knew it was going to be a tough game. Last week's game against Non Ards was a hurling game, lots of spaces, but today was more of a battle. It is our first championship win. "I think our backs are always tight and worked well. We've had a problem in the past getting scores but today our forwards scored 2-13 after 2-16 last week, so there's nothing wrong with that."
