Mohill v Carrigallen

Mohill 1-12 Carrigallen 2-6 Mohill edged out Carrigallen in a tight and entertaining tussle in the Mohill venue last Friday. This victory for the home side sees them top the league table on ten points with Carrigallen facing a battle to qualify for the play offs. They remain mid table with four points from six matches. The home side started at a frenetic pace and on three minutes Ronan Kennedy had the ball in the net. A flowing Mohill move up the field saw John Mc Guinness put Kennedy through to flick the ball past Enda Lyons in the Carrigallen goal. Benny O' Rourke won a free on six minutes for the visitors and slotted it over to register their first score. However, over the next ten minutes Mohill asserted their superiority on proceedings with Colm Beirne hitting three points without reply to put Mohill firmly in control. Carrigallen during this period were enjoying plenty of possession but failed to use it and when moves broke down in their forward line, the Mohill men took full advantage on the counter attack. However, the Carrigallen lads came roaring back into the game from the 20th minute. Benny O' Rourke knocked over another free after twenty minutes to reduce the gap. Another point from the same player from play on 23 minutes and Carrigallen were back in the game. Then a flowing move in the 25th minutes involving the Ward brothers Eoin and Killian up the wing resulted in Eoin releasing Benny O' Rourke to shoot low past the Mohill keeper and the scores were level. At this stage the match was turning into a duel between Colm Beirne and Benny O' Rourke. Colm put Mohill back in front with a 27th minute free before adding another from play on the 29th minute. A thrilling first half for the large crowd in attendance ended on a scoreline of Mohill 1-5 Carrigallen 1-3. The first half comeback from Carrigallen came at a cost though with defender Danny Lyons and Eoin Ward withdrawn through injury. Carrigallen started the second half brightly with Eamon Dolan scoring a fine point from play after just thirty seconds. However, from the resulting kickout disaster struck for Carrigallen with defender Gary Reynolds sustaining a serious injury following a collision with his brother Terence, who also went off injured soon after. Their resources stretched Carrigallen battled on. Points from Gavin Kelly (6 mins) and Shane Canning (8 mins) saw the Mohill lads re assert their authority but Carrigallen would not lie down and an 18th minute goal brought them right back into the match. Noel Doonan did well to win possession in the middle of the field and his long ball picked out Darren Mc Govern who hit a high rising shot to the net. However, as Carrigallen attacked in search of an equaliser Mohill exploited the gaps at the back and Ronan Kennedy took full advantage with two points in the 21st and 22nd minutes. Ciaran Flynn reduced the deficit to the minimum with a free on 24 but points from Philly Mc Guinness and Ronan Kennedy put three between the sides with 30 minutes gone. A fine point from Martin Dolan gave Carrigallen hope on 33 before Daniel Beck rounded off the scoring on 37 minutes.
