Exiles to remain in football championship

June 25, 2008
Nickey Brennan has dismissed speculation that the GAA is considering removing London and New York from the Connacht SFC due to their lack of competitiveness. Both London and New York have suffered heavy championship defeats in recent years and the trend continued their year when they were comfortably beaten by Sligo and Leitrim respectively. Ironically, Leitrim and Sligo have since joined London in the Tommy Murphy Cup draw following their defeats to Galway and Mayo over the past two weekends. GAA president Brennan moved to ease fears that the Exiles would be excluded from future Connacht senior football championships when he said: "I don't think it's an issue at the moment. "First of all, I think it's an issue for the Connacht Council but I don't think there is any appetite to change anything at this point in time. "They may not be overly competitive but I think the game is only part of an event. If you Leitrim, who went to New York this year. "I know a lot of people talked about the cost of going out but never talked about the amount of dollars they brought back with them in their pockets. I don't see any change, no."
