McDonnell glad to get the win

June 16, 2008
Armagh boss Peter McDonnell experienced his first Championship win since taken the helm at the Orchard County when his side defeated Cavan by four points in Kingspan Breffni Park on Sunday. "I'd say our ability to pick off our points at vital stages during the game was a huge plus for us and a source of frustration for Cavan, especially when it looked times they (Cavan) were about to get on level terms," said McDonnell after the match. While praising the opponents' spirit, the Mullaghbawn clubman insisted that the fact that Cavan did not get a single shot on goal on the day was a plus for Armagh's defence and it's one of the main reasons they are in the Ulster SFC semi-final. "Cavan were their usual spirited selves and they always carried an ability to hit us on the counter-attack," added McDonnell. "It was pleasing that we effected so many turnovers and our discipline all around the field was good. "The fact that they didn't get a shot in on goal all day says a lot too for our tackling and our success in plugging the holes that emerged. "People can put all sorts of labels on our style of play and tactics but we're into the next round of the Ulster Championship, and we'll take the nest game as it comes." Armagh will now face Down in the last four of the Ulster SFC on June 29, and McDonnell he and the team will be "keeping our fingers crossed" that Oisin McConville will be fit to face the Mourne County.
