Conroy tipped for Vin's post

April 09, 2008
Former Dublin star Tommy Conroy has emerged as the frontrunner to succeed Mickey Whelan as manager of All-Ireland club football champions St. Vincent's. Conroy, who won an All-Ireland medal with Dublin in 1983 and was part of the last St. Vincent's team in 1984 to claim county championship honours prior to last year, is expected to take over the reins from Whelan, who announced his intention to step down last week after leading the Marino club to county, provincial and All-Ireland success in recent months. Explaining his decision, the veteran boss said: "It's time for a new voice. "I took over the under 21 team four years ago and many of them played against Nemo Rangers in the All-Ireland final. That was a great way for me to finish off my management at the club. "Now it's time for another member of my backroom team to take over or someone else if the club wish. There are a number of very sound candidates but it'll be up to the executive committee to decide who they feel will be the best qualified. "I really enjoyed worked with these players and they gave me everything. It's very satisfying to work with a group of young men that come good together in the end. "St. Vincent's have a great tradition and I don't think we were winning that title out of turn."
