Hogan Cup: Doherty drives Dungannon to win

April 05, 2008
A brilliant 1-1 tally by wing-forward Patrick Doherty proved inspirational as St. Patrick's Dungannon overcame St. Brendan's, Killarney by 1-9 to 1-7 in the All-Ireland Colleges Senior Football final at Portlaoise. The Tyrone side trailed by 0-4 to 1-6 shortly after the restart but Doherty's crucial show helped turn the tables on the brave Kingdom lads. A vociferous crowd of 2,000 saw the sides draw level three times in the first 30 minutes as the game ebbed and flowed throughout. Left footed efforts from St. Pat's Sean Murphy (17 mins) and James O'Donoghue (25) for St. Brendan's hallmarked an exciting first half of football. After Chris O'Leary goaled for the Munster side to put them five points clear, it looked like curtains for 'Pat's. However the northerners inched their way back into the frame and Doherty's scores proved pivotal in shaping a fantastic win for the Dungannon side.
