O'Neill follows Brady into retirement

Mayo's Kevin O'Neill
Mayo's veteran corner forward Kevin O'Neill has announced his retirement from inter-county football. His decision comes in the same week as David Brady also called time on his inter-county career. Mayo manager John O'Mahony explained that both players had been contacted prior to a trial game last weekend and that both had confirmed they would not be returning to the fold this season. O'Mahony said: "I'll like to pay tribute to both lads. They've been great servants of Mayo football and they will be sorely missed. But, having said that, they are both always welcome in a Mayo dressing room. "Kevin is stepping away from county football I think because he's found it increasingly difficult to balance his work commitments with the huge demands on inter-county players now. He has a very busy schedule and there's a lot of travel involved with his job too." O'Neill burst onto the inter-county scene while still in his teens and won an All-Star award at the age of 19 in 1993. He fell out of favour for a few years before returning in 2006 and playing a starring role in Mayo's march to the All-Ireland final that year. One player who did take part in the trial game last Saturday was experienced centre back James Nallen. However, there was no sign of his Crossmolina colleague Ciaran McDonald, despite his recent return to club training.
