UCC rule over Garda

January 31, 2008
A much sharper UCC outfit swept to a double scores victory, 0-16 to 0-8, over Garda College in a largely predictable Fitzgibbon Cup clash at the Mardyke. The Cork college were firmly in control from pillar to post even though they fielded without key men Donnacha Cody (Kilkenny) and Michael Rice (Kilkenny). UCC held most of the aces with centre back Richie Foley and full-forward Eoghan Murphy in particularly fine form for the would-be winners. Behind them, goalkeeper Anthony Nash plus Conor O'Driscoll, Dara McSweeney and Aidan Quillagan were at the top of their game as UCC went in at the interval leading by 0-10 to 0-5. John Halbert, with three points from midfield, was in fine fettle as well while, in contrast, the Garda's shooting was poor and apart from Barry Nugent and Mike Fitzgerald, the boys in blue hadn't a lot going for themselves up front. Significantly, all of the Garda's full-forward line were substituted over the course of the hour while at the other end of the pitch, UCC had no such trouble in finding the range.
