Death of former All-Ireland referee Fintan Tierney

The death occurred on Tuesday, 8th of January at his home in Butlersbridge after a long illness of well-known GAA personality, Fintan Tierney. A native of Co. Longford, Fintan was deeply involved with Cavan football at all levels down the years at club and county levels. After his playing career was over the affable Fintan took up refereeing and quickly rose through to the ranks, being honoured with referring many major games at club and inter-county levels including the drawn All-Ireland senior final in 1972 between Offaly and Kerry. Throughout his lifetime, he took a keen interest in GAA affairs, managing club teams in the Breffni county with a good degree of success. In more recent times he was involved with the Cavan Ladies Football Board as an officer, and played a role in establishing Ladies Football in the Breffni county. A larger than life personality, Fintan attended all major club and county games in Kingspan/Breffni Park over the years, and also followed the fortunes of his native county, Longford and Cavan on the playing fields. He was also a officer and team-manager of the Butlersbridge over the years, and played his part in establishing his local club as a strong unit in the Association in Co. Cavan. Well-known in business circles locally and nationally, Fintan is survived by his wife, Mary and family who are wished every sympathy on his death.
