Galway not giving up on Pearse Stadium lights

October 11, 2007
The Galway county board has denied that they are scrapping plans to install floodlights at Pearse Stadium in Salthill. Recent reports suggested that the county board were about to pull the plug on the floodlights at the city venue, and install them in either Tuam Stadium of Duggan Park, Ballinasloe instead. But while conceding that it may be necessary to withdraw their current planning application and resubmit and altered plan for floodlights, the chairman of the Pearse Stadium Development Committee, Frank Burke, insisted that they remained committed to lighting up the Salthill venue. "There is no question of us withdrawing our plans to install floodlights in Pearse Stadium. It is the premier GAA ground in Galway and plans and infrastructure were included for floodlights when it was redeveloped a few years ago. "There are some planning issues to be sorted out and we want to work with Galway City Council in resolving these. There are some concerns of residents we also wish the address and we will be doing that," he said. Pearse Stadium was fitted out with temporary floodlighting for last year's first International Rules test between Ireland and Australia.
