Down 'keeper calls it a day
October 03, 2007

Mickey McVeigh
Down goalkeeper Mickey McVeigh has announced his retirement from the inter-county scene after a dozen years as the net minder with the Mourne County.
The Castlewellan clubman never won an Ulster senior title with his county, as he lost out in three finals in 1996, 1999 and 2003. McVeigh took over the no. 1 jersey after the retirement of double All-Ireland winner Neil Collins.
He is the holder of two Dr. McKenna Cup medals with Down and three Railway Cup medals with Ulster, which he won in 2000, 2003 and 2004. Additionally he had the honour of captaining his province in their last success which was against Leinster when the final was held in Paris.
In 2005 Mickey McVeigh was selected by former Down team-manager Pete McGrath to keep goals for Ireland in the International Rules series in Australia.
At club level, Mickey won two Down SFC medals in 1994 and 1995, and is also the only Castlewellan player to hold three All-Ireland Kilmacud 'sevens' medals for victories in 1996, 2000 and 2006. He will continue to turn out for his club, Castlewellan for the forseeable future.
