Conway says hat-trick of goals was the foundation stone
September 03, 2007
Derry minor football manager Niall Conway believes his side's success in notching three first half goals paved the way for their All-Ireland MFC semi-final replay win over Laois at Navan.
The Oak Leafers won by 4-7 to 1-11 in a game which bore little resemblance to the drawn encounter at Croke Park a week previous.
"Ultimately, goals win games and that's what did it for us," said Conway. "We scored three goals in the first half and while Laois came back at us again I always knew the lads had it in them to grind it out.
"We talked about what happened the first day at Croke Park and we made sure that it didn't play on our minds as a missed opportunity.
"I think that held us in good stead when Laois came back at us then in the replay. We kept our nerve; we responded to them quickly enough when they got back close to us and managed to close it out this time."
