Ref attacked in Sligo

August 02, 2007
The Sligo Competitions Control Committee is to investigate an alleged attack on a referee by a spectator during a recent intermediate football league game between Coolaney/Mullinabreena and St. Michael's, Ballintogher. The incident followed a melee which broke out in the closing stages of the Division 2A game at Achonry last month. Peace was restored and play had resumed when the spectator ran onto the pitch and aimed a kick in the direction of referee Declan O'Boyle. The Calry official walked off the field but was persuaded to return and bring the game to a conclusion by officials from both clubs. Sligo CCC member and referees' administrator Joe Taaffe confirmed that the referee had referred to the incident in his report and would be discussing the alleged assault this week.
