Cork deny McCarthy quit threat

Timmy McCarthy
Cork officials have denied reports that long-serving half forward Timmy McCarthy has quit the county hurling panel. McCarthy was reportedly unhappy at being taken off in the Munster SHC semi-final loss to Waterford - just 20 minutes after he was introduced to the fray. Despite Niall McCarthy's ankle injury which will sideline him for six weeks, his namesake from Castlelyons has failed to break back into the team for Saturday's All-Ireland qualifier against Dublin at Parnell Park. McCarthy's Castlelyons club-mate Kieran McGann, who was dropped before the National League, has been recalled to the panel due to Cork's mounting injury list. One of their injured stars, Tom Kenny, has targeted the qualifier clash with Tipperary on July 14 for his return to action. The Grenagh man was forced off with a hamstring injury against Waterford and is resigned to missing the qualifier games against both Dublin and Offaly.
