You won't have to travel far before you'll meet an upset backer in the GAA. Armed with the logic that 3/1 or bigger is a "great price in a two horse race" they look out for dangerous underdogs and try to cash in. So far this year it's been lean pickings for these bettors in the 2007 Championship. Sligo and Monaghan reaching their provincial finals over marginally more fancied opposition in Roscommon and Derry would have been slightly unexpected, but other than that it's been as expected all the way. Dublin hurlers came ever so close against Wexford, but that's the nearest the 3/1 backer will have come so far.
This weekend "outsider guy" is spoiled for choice - and Antrim could easily be his first port of call. Clare are short of seven regulars, with injuries to Conor Plunkett and Bernard Gaffney in a weekend challenge match against Offaly further exacerbating the injury crisis for their trip up north. Antrim will have their supporters at odds of 7/1, but though this price from Ladbrokes is very tempting, we're going to look elsewhere.
Offaly's trip to Tipp to take on Thurles will see plenty of supporters of the Faithful county ploughing in at odds of 7/2. The Magic Sign are obviously paying greater heed to Tipperary's championship pedigree and home advantage than they are to the tiredness factor that may come into play after that epic series against Limerick or the boost Offaly will take from the great display of their under 21's last midweek and one suspects that they may be proved right - but not without a few nervous moments. This Offaly team has made a habit of bursting out of the blocks, and they might just do that in Thurles. The odds of 15/2 about Offaly leading at half time before Tipp go on to win are very attractive, and with Tipp battle hardened from the three games against Tipp, they should bounce back from the likely early surge from their neighbours to the north east.
The underdogs keep coming this week - Wexford have always given Kilkenny something to think about in Leinster finals, while the Dub hurlers with home advantage will try to rattle Cork in front of a vociferous crowd, but we're going to look instead to the Wexford footballers as the ones who will create the shock of the day and recommend them at 5/2 to take out Laois in Croke Park. Wexford have sneaked into the Leinster semi final with very little fuss, but they scored a very healthy 12 points in the first half against Louth before wobbling slightly towards the end and that kind of scoring power will trouble Laois who are not known for running up big tallies. Laois play a very tight running game, a legacy of the Mick O'Dwyer era down there, but with Colm Morris and Phillip Wallace as dominant as ever in the Wexford full back line, they might find goal chances hard to carve out. If Wexford can keep a clean sheet here and Forde has one of his big days, Laois will find it very difficult to get the 15 scores they'll need to win.
