Feile joy for Castleknock
June 18, 2007
Dublin hurling received a major boost at the weekend when Castleknock were crowned All-Ireland Feile na nGael Division 1 champions following a 4-8 to 0-3 victory over Limerick's Ahane in the final at Nowlan Park.
It was an incredible achievement for a club which was founded just nine years ago and provided further evidence of Dublin underage hurling's current well-being. There was also joy for Castletown-Geoghegan of Westmeath, who defeated St. John's of Antrim by 0-21 to 0-6 to land the Division 2 title.
Aenghus Clarke, whose brother Joe is a member of the Westmeath senior hurling team, top-scored for the winners with 0-12.
Predictably, Kilkenny's representatives won more than their fair share of games over the weekend, with three of the finals being contested by local sides. Bennettsbridge defeated Kilmacow in the Division 3 decider, Windgap proved too strong for Sliverue, while GAA president Nickey Brennan's native club Conahy Shamrocks accounted for Fenians.
The Division 1 camogie final was an all-Galway affair which resulted in a 2-8 to 1-3 victory for Sarsfields over Milford.
The Feile was jointly hosted by Kilkenny and Carlow, and proved to be a resounding success with over 5,000 children taking part. As ever, the highlight was the colourful parade of 140 underage teams as young camogie, handball and hurling stars marched through the streets of Kilkenny city on Friday evening.
