McEntee twins retire

April 04, 2007

John McEntee
Armagh football's famous McEntee twins, John and Tony, have announced their retirement from the inter-county scene. The brothers, who will be 30 in June, have cited a loss of appetite and increasing competition for places in Joe Kernan's side as their reasons for bowing out. The news comes just days after the twins won their fourth All-Ireland club medals with Crossmaglen Rangers. John has been in the spotlight after referee Eugene Murtagh failed to send him off in last Sunday's All-Ireland club final replay against Dr Crokes, despite receiving two yellow cards. The former Abbey CBS college stars made their Armagh senior debut together in 1996, and went on to win six Ulster senior championships, one National League and an All-Ireland in 2002. They were also key members of the mighty Rangers side which captured a string of county, provincial and All Ireland championships. The brothers will continue lining out for Crossmaglen for the foreseeable future.
