Hayes explains jersey change

October 05, 2006
Former Carlow senior football manager Liam Hayes has explained the reasons for suggesting that the county board change the colour of their jerseys. Hayes caused some controversy within the county when he suggested that a new design should be adopted to tone down the colours of the Carlow jersey. The red, yellow and green is certainly the most standout jersey in the country, but the former Meath footballer stressed that there is a stigma attached to the garment that must be replaced. "The jersey has two great negatives attached to it. Firstly, it is a flag of complete failure, and what strong, ambitious, young footballer in his right mind wants to dress up in failed colours?" wrote Hayes. "And, secondly, and even more importantly, the colours on the Carlow jersey are an open invitation for opponents to ride roughshod over them. "When opposing teams see the jersey, they fully expect to beat Carlow - in truth, they believe they have a god given right to beat Carlow."
