New York cause upset

May 22, 2006
New York 1-18 Derry 1-12 New York caused one of the biggest surprises of the year so far as they earned a place in the Ulster championship final following a six-point victory over Derry at the Gaelic Grounds on Sunday May 21st. Derry lined out minus the service of a number of players due to injury, suspension and exams, but they looked the brighter side in the opening half. The visitors scored the game's first goal midway through the opening half with Gary Biggs dispatching the sliothar to the net to help his side to a two-point interval lead. New York were not in anyway overawed by their opponents and kept plugging away. They got the break they deserved 15 minutes into the second half when Michael Kennedy scored a goal to edge the home side in front. Sensing victory, New York upped the tempo and fired over a succession of points as Derry heads seemed to drop, while New York stretched their lead to six-points by the final whistle. However, the Ulster final is in doubt as New York are unlikely to travel home due to visa problems, while Antrim are reported to have stated that they cannot afford to make the journey stateside.
