Stradbally make it five in-a-row

November 21, 2005
Stradbally…..1-8 The Nire……1-4 Stradbally secured a record-breaking fifth consecutive Waterford senior football title when they defeated The Nire in Saturday's replay at Dungarvan. The scoreline flattered the winners who had played second fiddle to The Nire for most of the second half, but snatched victory with a pointed free from Niall Curran and a last gasp-fisted goal by captain John Hearne. It was a shattering defeat for The Nire who had dominated second half possession, but couldn't translate it into scores. The champions were marginally the better side in the opening half and despite conceding a penalty to Shane Walsh, took a 0-7 to 1-2 lead into the interval. Points from Walsh and Alan Lawlor brought The Nire level in the 40th minute and for a 10-minute spell afterwards, they all but owned the ball but couldn't break down a resolute Stradbally defence. Extra-time looked to be on the cards until Curran pointed a free in the 59th minute and a minute into stoppage time, Hearne rose highest to first the ball to the net.
