Spelman ready for Carlow challenge

June 10, 2005
Mayo hurling manager Gerry Spelman believes his side have a great chance of causing an upset against in-form Carlow in the Christy Ring Cup on Sunday. The Connacht side face a Carlow team that have only lost two competitive matches this year and already have a win under their belt in the Christy Ring Cup. Mayo's last match came against Donegal last month when they won the Division three title and Spelman revealed that preparations had been going well. "We've been training hard especially over the last two weeks, a lot of the lads have only came back into hard training since then, after they finished exams in College," said Spelman. "We've played a few friendly games since the final and they've gone well. But you can't put too much stock into challenge matches, because there is no guarantee that it will transfer into the championship games."
