TG4 GAA coverage

March 07, 2005
WEDNESDAY 9 MARCH 10:00pm Laochra Gael - Seán Purcell A player ahead of his time, Seán Purcell played football with Galway >from 1948 to 1962. He won only one All Ireland medal, bit that in no way reflects the respect he commands among the GAA fraternity. His on-field partnership with Frankie Stockwell earned them the name 'The Terrible Twins', a duo that leveled opponents' defences. Seán is one of the most outstanding talents Gaelic football has ever known. A multi-talented player, he was comfortable in any position, but it was as a centre forward that he is remembered for and he was chosen on both Team of the Century and Millennium in that position. SATURDAY 12 MARCH 2005 7:15pm GAA BEO Live coverage of Dublin v Westmeath from a floodlit Parnell Park in Dublin in the 4th round of the Allianz National Football League. Athenry (Galway) and James Stephens (Kilkenny) will battle it out for Club hurling glory after beating Toomevara and O'Donovan Rossa respectively in the semi-finals. Athenry are back in the final for the first time since 2001 while James Stephens last appeared in the decider back in 1982. In the AIB Club Football Final at 3:40pm, Portlaoise (Laois) will play Ballina Stephenites (Mayo). Portlaoise were successful in 1983 when they went on to win the All-Ireland title and were impressive en route to the final beating highly rated Rhode, Kilmacud Crokes, Skryne and Crossmaglen Rangers. They can call on several experienced Laois players, including Kevin Fitzpatrick, Aidan Fennelly, Colm Byrne, Ian Fitzgerald, Martin Delaney and team captain, Colm Parkinson. Ballina beat Roscommon Gaels, Killererin and Kilmurry Ibrickane to clinch a place in the Final. Anchored by Mayo midfielders, Ronan McGarrity and David Brady, they are a very well balanced side, although they also have some fine individual talents, including wing-back, Enda Devenney, whose excellence in the Connacht championship earned him the Provincial Player award. GAA Beo will be presented by Micheál Ó Domhnaill with commentary by Brian Tyers and Mac Dara Mac Donncha.
