Walsh rescues Tourlestrane

Tourlestrane.......1-8 St. Mary's..............2-5 A brace of late points from Matthew Walsh earned Tourlestrane a draw with St. Mary's in the Sligo SFC final at Markievicz Park on Sunday, October 17. The Sligo town side looked set for victory after top scorer Mark Breheny scored 1-1 in quick succession to give them a two-point lead after 59 minutes. But Walsh, who captained Tourlestrane when they last won the Owen B Hunt Cup in 1997, came to his side's rescue with two last-gasp pointed frees. Tourlestrane had opened up an early four-point lead before county star Breheny brought St. Mary's back into contention with his first goal. The sides were level, 1-2 to 0-5, at the interval. Gerry McGowan restored Tourlestrane's lead before former Westmeath captain Ger Heavin equalized for the town side. When John Marren goaled for Tourlestrane with eight minutes remaining, the south county outfit were in pole position. But Breheny then took centre stage before Walsh levelled proceedings in injury-time.
