Mayo in race for All-Ireland handball glory

August 18, 2004
Mayo make an important mid-week trip to Croke Park on Wednesday, 18th August in another quest for All-Ireland glory. At stake is a semi-final place in the 60 x 30 Senior Doubles All-Ireland Handball Championship and Ballaghaderreen's Dessie Keegan and Vinny Moran are the men aiming to keep the Mayo flag flying at Croke Park. The pair are playing in only their second year at Senior level, but are hoping for greater things this year after making the semi-finals last year and winning the Intermediate title in 2002. One half of their opposition tonight will come in the form of Kilkenny's legendary ŒDuxie' Walsh.  Duxie was recently defeated 21-20, 21-11 in the All-Ireland Senior Singles Quarter Final by former Wexford hurler, Barry Goff, but along with partner Eugene Downey, the pair, who have been back in intensive training, will be making a bid for their eleventh 60 x 30 All-Ireland title, having last won the title in 1997. Also flying the Mayo flag in the Quarter Final stages are Ballaghaderreen's Joe McCann and Campbell Brennan. The pair, who have never won the title, will take on Wexford's Tommy Hynes and Colin Keeling, victors in 2000. Immediately preceding them in the programme, which begins at 5.30pm on Saturday 21st August at Croke Park, will be Wicklow's Michael Gregan and Pat Quaile who meet Carlow's David King and John Ryan. Friday evening (20th August, 8.00pm) sees action >from the renowned ŒKing of Doubles', Tom Sheridan. Sheridan will be joining forces with regular partner, Walter O'Connor as they face the in-form duo of Barry Goff and Gavin Buggy from Wexford. O'Connor was recently defeated at the Semi-Final stage of the Senior Singles Championship by Cavan's Michael Finnegan, 21-19, 10-21, 21-14, but as current title holders, and with 36 All-Ireland Doubles titles to Sheridan's credit, the men from Meath will not relinquish their crown easily. A full programme of semi-final action is also taking place over the weekend of 20th/21st August in various grades.
