Kilkenny dominate All Star hurling nominations

October 15, 2003
Eight of last year's GAA All Star hurlers have once again been nominated for awards in 2003. The football nominations will be announced today and the final selection will be announced live on RTE at the GAA All Stars banquet at Dublin's City West Hotel on November 28th. DJ Carey will have to wait at least another 12 months to win a record 10th All-Star award after he was surprisingly omitted from the list of 45 nominations which was released on Tuesday, October 14. Kilkenny's All-Ireland winning captain is one of three members of the double-winning side to be excluded, the others being corner back James Ryall and midfielder Paddy Mullally, who only broke into the team at the All-Ireland semi-final stage. Carey equalled Pat Spillane's football record of nine All-Star awards last year after playing just two competitive matches all season, an All-Ireland semi-final and final against Tipperary and Clare respectively. But despite being an ever-present this year, his below par showings have ruled him out of contention for a 10th award. All-Ireland runners-up Cork have 10 players nominated, while Wexford and Tipp come next with seven and five nominations each. Among Cork's nominations are brothers Sean and Setanta O hAilpin, while Tipp also have brothers nominated in Paul and Eoin Kelly. Offaly have four players named, all of them first-time nominees, while beaten Munster finalists Waterford have just two -forwards John Mullane and Paul Flynn. Dublin fans will be delighted with the inclusion of Conal Keaney and Paul McGrane, while Clare, Galway and Antrim have one nomination each. In all, there are eight of last year's team nominated again -Kilkenny quintet Michael Kavanagh, Peter Barry, Derek Lyng, Henry Shefflin and Martin Comerford, Tipperary brothers Paul and Eoin Kelly and Clare midfielder Colin Lynch. The football nominees will be announced on Thursday, October 16, and the awards will be presented at a banquet in the City West Hotel in Dublin on November 28. The county by county breakdown is: Kilkenny (12), Cork (10), Wexford (7), Tipperary (5), Offaly (4), Waterford (2), Dublin (2), Galway (1), Clare (1), Antrim (1).
