Success Storey!
April 05, 2004
Former Wexford hurler Martin Storey smiled in sheer delight as he saw his fourteen year old daughter Ciara pick up her second senior colleges All-Ireland medal when they defeated St.Mary's Charleville 4-7 to 1-4 in Saturday's All-Ireland Senior A Colleges final replay in Freshford.
The Wexford school who were seeking back to back victories got off to a dream start with a goal within the opening minute from Siona Nolan. The Slaney side had much hurling expertise in the background with three former inter-county hurlers with daughters on the team, Mick Jacob whose daughter Ursula captained the team, Martin Storey whose daughter Ciara played in goals, and Ciara O'Connor whose father Teddy also wore the purple and gold. A delighted Martin Storey commented after the match, "you don't win All-Irelands too often, so it is good to celebrate them!" and that is what the Wexford girls did on the way home.
Backed by a strong first half wind the Coláiste Bride girls added a second goal five minutes later >from the brilliant Úna Leacy who had her sister Mary also on the team.
Charleville who were seeking their seventh senior title had to wait a full seventeen minutes before Limerick senior player Sinéad Mc Auliffe sent over her first free of the day. It was the Wexford side who were in command at the break leading 2-3 to 0-2. While Charlevile got the second half off to a good start with Mc Auliffe sending over a third free, a goal one minute later from Úna Leacy had the Wexford side leaping for joy.
However, it was immediately cancelled out with Charleville's only goal of the match from Emer Watson , but the brilliant Wexford captain Ursula Jacob sent over a fine point five minutes later and when Stacey Redmond added a further point the call was going beyond the Charleville side.
The beautiful Corn Sceilg found it's way to the sunny south east with a fourth goal from substitute Anna Murphy on the stroke of full time. The pressure will now be on the Wexford school to do the double as their Junior side are into the Junior All-Ireland final on April 24th.
Elsewhere the Dubs had a great win in division one of the National League when they overcame a fancied Wexford side 2-6 to 1-7 in Glenalbyn yesterday. A hungry and intent Dublin side who remain unbeaten in division one led from the ninth minute of the game following a Valerie Reaney goal. Dublin were well in control and midfield player Áine Fanning was superb where she policed the great Wexford player Áine Codd, however it was the Dubs who were ahead 1-3 to 0-5 at the break.
Playing in goals for Wexford was fourteen year old Ciara Storey, daughter of Martin who made her senior inter-county debut despite having played on the Saturday with the winning Coláiste Bride team in the Colleges All-Ireland final. Playing with the wind in the second half the Dubs under manager Peter Lucey, had his daughter Ciara to thank for a long free which landed in around the square.
With several Dublin players hovering there it was Siobhán Treacy who got the final touch to the ball to leave it 2-3 to 1-5 after two minutes of the second half. However, the Slaney side girls were not finished yet and Josie Dwyer gave them a much needed boost with a goal two minutes later. Both sides battled against the elements and while Áine Codd sent over another Wexford free, the winning of the game came for the Dubs from two Siobhán Treacy points, one a free and the second from play, before Codd had the final say with a free with two minutes to go.
The Dubs can now travel in confidence to Derry on April 18th in their final match of the series before reaching the knock out stages.
The only other match in division one between Derry and Antrim due to go ahead in Castledawson was called off as a mark of respect to the Mc Mullan family who lost their son Frankie so suddenly last week. Two of his sisters Sinéad and Majella played for both Dunloy and Antrim. Cumann Camógaiochta na nGael extend their sympathy to the Mc Mullan family.
There was some consolation for Wexford as they had a run away victory over Dublin 2-7 to 0-2 played as a curtain raiser to the division match in Glenalbyn. A goal after eleven minutes from Úna Leacy following some great passing involving Brigid Curran, Evelyn Quigley before Leacy who had played with the victorious Coláiste Bride team on the Saturday finally sent the ball to the back of the net.
A second goal from Catherine O'Loughlin just before the break gave the Slaney side girls a comfortable 2-5 to 0-1 lead at the break, the Dublin score having come from Emer Mc Fadden with their second half point from Emer Ring. A strong Wexford defense kept the Dubs at bay in the second while Dublin can thank their fine 'keeper Irene Kirwan for bringing off some superb saves throughout.
Elsewhere in division two, Laois were in top form when they over came Wicklow 6-11 to 2-5 in Pearse Park, Arklow. A hat-trick of first half goals from Elaine Mahony gave the O'Moore County a commanding half time lead of 3-7 to 1-1. Wicklow improved in the second half with some well taken points from Nicola Newsome and a goal from Tanya Mc Donald.
Down had their shooting boots on when they overcame Carlow 1-22 to 1-2 in Clonduff, with half time substitute Mary Gilmore becoming the second half hero with a total of 1-5 all from play. Meath held Roscommon to a 3-7, 4-4 draw in Athleague as the Royals denied Roscommon their opening league points when Christine Raleigh crashed her second to the Roscommon net with time almost up.
Meath had little difficulty in overcoming Wicklow in the Leinster Minor championship ahead 5-03 to 0-0 they added a further 4-3 in the second half. A hat trick of goals from Deborah Wigglesworth together with two goals each from Jane Dolan, and Emily Mangan paved the way for an easy victory for the Royals.
