Former Dublin midfielder Darren Magee is enjoying a new lease of life with his adopted club, Athlone.

Magee joined the Shannonsiders last year and appeared as a late substitute in their Westmeath SFC quarter-final replay defeat to The Downs. He has since established himself on the team and was among the goal-scorers as Athlone opened their championship campaign with a 4-5 to 0-8 victory over Coralstown/Kinnegad last Saturday evening in TEG Cusack Park.

The former Kilmacud Crokes clubman had served as a Wicklow selector during his older brother Jonny's time in charge of the Garden County.

Athlone's town rivals Garrycastle also made a winning start to their Westmeath SFC campaign when accounting for newly-promoted St. Mary's, Rochfortbridge on a 1-13 to 1-10 scoreline. With Dessie Dolan held in reserve, ex-Roscommon sharpshooter and new recruit Ger Heneghan caught the eye with a haul of 0-5 for the 2011 Leinster club champions.
