UCD enjoyed a surprise victory over UCC in the Fitzgibbon Cup at the Mardyke today.

Corner-forward Tom Phelan from Kilkenny netted the game's only goal in the 3^rd minute and the Belfield college went on to record a 1-15 to 0-13 win.

With captain Padraic Guinan leading by example at the back and DJ Foran making his mark up front, JJ Doyle's side held on to collect maximum points against a UCC side that inflicted a heavy defeat on CIT in last week's round 1 encounter in Group A.

The home were short odds favourites to beat their Dublin counterparts but they had to do without some key personnel including the injured Tom Devine and Cork duo Mark Coleman and Shane Kingston while they trailed by 1-9 to 0-8 at half-time.

Waterford star Foran finished as top scorer with 0-11.
