Rory Gallagher has stepped down as Donegal senior football manager after three seasons in charge of the Tir Chonaill County.

Donegal county board confirmed the new this evening via their Twitter account with the following:

Having been a selector under Jim McGuinness from 2011 to 2013, Gallagher took over the reins as Donegal boss in October 2014 and steered the team to back-to-back Ulster SFC final appearances in 2015 and 2016 where they lost out to Monaghan and Tyrone, respectively, on each occasion, and failed to make it beyond the All-Ireland quarter-finals.

The Tir Chonaill men were heavily defeated by the Red Hands at the provincial semi-final stage this summer before edging past Longford and Meath in the qualifiers and enduring a 15-point hammering to Galway which brought the curtain down on their season in hugely disappointing fashion.

Since last Saturday week's defeat to the Tribesmen, speculation has been rife as to whether or not the Enniskillen native would remain at the helm for another year.

The 38-year-old had been ratified to a three-year term with an option for a fourth year, but indicated his decision to step down ahead of tonight's County Committee meeting.
