Connacht hero Carty was a Rossie minor

Connacht's Jack Carty kicks a winning conversion against Wasps and inset in action for Roscommon minors in 2009.

Jack Carty was the toast of Irish rugby on Saturday evening when his last-gasp conversion handed Connacht a dramatic 20-18 win over Wasps in the European Champions Cup.

The 24-year-old Kiltoom native showed nerves of steel to land the conversion from the touchline after Naulia Dawai went over for a late, late try. Carty's winning kick came a week after he missed two crucial kicks in Connacht's defeat to the same opposition at the Ricoh Arena.

Connacht manager Pat Lam was full of praise for Carty, who played on the Roscommon minor team that lost to Kerry in the 2009 All-Ireland quarter-final at Croke Park.

"I'm thrilled for him and so proud of him. He works so hard, especially this week, coming in and doing extra work. It's what it is all about. That is the sort of culture we have. We understand we are in a performance industry and the only currency the boys have is the performance."
