Westmeath GAA have moved to tackle the county's underage discipline problem by proposing severe penalties for both The Downs and Maryland/Tang in the wake of their abandoned U16 Division 1 football semi-final in late September.

The Downs were leading by four points in injury-time when a huge row broke out after one of their mentors was allegedly struck. Referee Des McEnery was left with little option but to call a halt to proceedings as matters got out of control.

According to this week's Westmeath Topic, both clubs are set to be thrown out of the championship, while 48-week bans have been recommended for two individuals, one from either club. While confirming that the investigation is complete and recommendations have been made, Westmeath chairman Sean Sheridan could not offer official comment as both clubs are appealing the proposed sanctions.

The Tyrrellspass clubman admitted that there has been a drop in disciplinary standards at underage level, especially in the U16 grade. If The Downs and Maryland/Tang are disqualified, St. Loman's will be crowned U16 champions without having to play a final.
