Failure to field for a second year in a row has put NUIG's future in the Galway senior football championship in real doubt.

The Galway University's participation in future club SFC games will be under scrutiny after they gave Micheal Breathnach a walkover in the championship.

In doing so, Micheal Breathnach are the first team through to the Galway SFC quarterfinals.

The sides were due to meet in Spiddal last weekend, but the students informed the county board on Friday night that they would be unable to field.

Last year, they gave a walkover to An Chearthu Rua as many of their players are away for the summer and the same occurred this season.

NUIG have a proud tradition in the Galway SFC having won the title in three occasions, the last of which came back in 1973.

However, their long association with the championship will be a source of great debate over the coming months.
