Former Armagh manager Brian McAlinden has described the level of abuse aimed at Kieran McGeeney from certain quarters as "not acceptable".

McAlinden was in attendance at Kingspan Breffni Park on Sunday for the Orchard County's Ulster SFC first round defeat to Cavan and described his disgust at the abuse directed at McGeeney by some of the Armagh fans.

"Whatever about Joe Brolly, these are so-called Armagh fans," McAlinden told the Irish Daily Star.

"I was sitting behind Kieran's mother and wife. The abuse he was getting from Armagh supporters was not acceptable. I don't think there's any room for that in the game.

"There were days when myself and Brian Canavan were Armagh managers that my wife wouldn't have been very happy coming home from matches. It's not acceptable from your own.

"They don't like the style of football or where we are, but we are where we are as a county. The glory days are gone for the foreseeable future, and it's going to take a while to get them back again, but it certainly won't be for want of try or effort from Kieran."
