Morgan: John Corcoran will be sorely missed

The late John Corcoran with former Cork football manager Billy Morgan

Former Cork football manager Billy Morgan has paid a glowing tribute to Cork GAA stalwart John Corcoran who died suddenly yesterday.

Corcoran acted as a county senior selector with Morgan who remarked to The Examiner: "It's shattering news.

"John was a great guy, he was really brilliant. He came on the Cork scene as a selector in 2004 after Carbery won the county championship and stayed for the next two years and then he came on board when I took the UCC job too.

"I found him to be really knowledgeable about football, a highly intelligent man. He was always shrewd and able to give his opinion in a straightforward way without it ever being overbearing.

"His advice was always highly valued and there was never any bias, trying to get fellas on or off the team based on where they were from. He'll be sorely missed, we loved having him around."

Comhairle Ardoideachais statement:

'Comhairle Ardoideachais wish to announce the very sad and untimely passing of their Rúnaí, John Corcoran, St. Mary's GAA, County Cork.

'John was involved at all levels within the GAA and was a very able and experienced administrator for Cork and Munster GAA as well as Comhairle Ardoideachais at national level. 'Whilst John had a love for many sports, including horse racing, John was devoted to the GAA and was a tireless worker both on and off the pitch.

'In higher education circles, 'Big John', as he was affectionately called, will be fondly remembered as a selector with UCC Sigerson Cup teams and was a huge presence along the sideline for UCC, helping to guide them to the Centenary Sigerson cup in 2011 together with success in Belfast as recent as 2014.

'John had a great pride in his service to the association and he will be very sadly missed by all his friends, colleagues and many acquaintances throughout Ireland and beyond. He was a larger than life figure and we mourn his passing.

'Comhairle Ardoideachais extends their deep and sincere sympathy to John's family, relations and many friends in St Mary's GAA, Coiste Chontae Corcaigh, UCC GAA, Comhairle Ardoideachais and Cumann Lúthchleas Gael.

'Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis'.
