Cork GAA is in mourning following the death of All-Ireland hurling winning selector Fred Sheedy.

The Kilworth club man was a selector with the Rebel County during its last three victorious Liam MacCarthy Cup triumphs, working under Jimmy Barry-Murphy in 1999, Donal O'Grady in 2004 and John Allen in 2005.

A fine hurler himself, Sheedy excelled during his playing career with Avondhu and also contributed on to successful divisional sides and for Kilworth in a coaching capacity.

A statement on the Kilworth club website read: "Kilworth GAA club extends its deepest sympathy to Peg, Brian, Annette, Claire, Freddy and the extended Sheedy family on the sad loss of our esteemed vice president and former club chairman Fred.

"A legend of Kilworth GAA, Avondhu and Cork hurling. An outstanding hurler for his beloved Kilworth, Avondhu and Cork, a man with a brilliant hurling brain, an excellent player, coach and selector with Kilworth over many years, a county  winner as a player and selector with Kilworth, a county winner as a player and selector with Avondhu and a selector with the Cork senior hurling team that won All-Irelands in 99, 04 and 05.

"A huge loss to his family, our club and Kilworth, Fred will be sadly missed by all in the club. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis."
