Kilkenny Sec pays tribute to Shefflin

Kilkenny's Henry Shefflin celebrates his 9th all Ireland medal.

Writing in his report to the annual Kilkenny GAA convention, county board secretary Jimmy Walsh heaped praise on the legend that is Henry Shefflin.

In a well-documented report that covered every area of Kilkenny GAA including the county footballers historic win in the Sam Maguire Cup, Walsh gave a glowing account of Henry Shefflin's career after the Ballyhale Shamrocks clubman announced his inter-county retirement following their All-Ireland club SHC final success in March.

"It brought an end to the inter-county career of the most decorated player in the game. Henry's record 10 All-Ireland senior medals was added to with six National League and 13 Leinster medals," wrote Walsh.

"Henry made his debut in 1999 and in an outstanding career at school, club and county level went on to add six senior county championship and three All-Ireland club medals.

"Henry also won eleven All-Star awards and was chosen as Hurler of the Year in 2002, 2006 and 2012. In the latter his leadership against Galway was almost miraculous.

"In 2006, he was chosen as Ireland's Sportsman of the Year, a rare achievement for any inter-county player."
