Michael Walsh has emerged as the frontrunner for the vacant Down football manager's post.
With Jim McCorry's successor expected to be appointed in the coming days, the Irish News is reporting that the 34-year-old is in pole position to take up the Mourne County reins.
Walsh, who was one of the stars of Down's 1999 All-Ireland minor triumph but whose senior career was cut short by injury, stepped down as Mayobridge manager following their recent county final loss to four-in-a-row champions Kilcoo. His former club and county team-mate Benny Coulter is among those who have backed Walsh, who would become one of the youngest inter-county managers if he is appointed.
Meanwhile, former Down All-Ireland winning full back Conor Deegan has clarified that he was never contacted in relation to the position.
