Ballygalget senior hurling manager Johnny McGrattan is defying the odds in his recovery from a devastating fall.

The ex-Down senior hurler was left fighting for his life following the accident at his home which happened the day he had coached his team in the Down SHC final.

The 38-year-old's wife Louise and the McGrattan family had asked for prayers for a full and speedy recovery for Johnny.

"The doctor has told us that it's the closest thing to a miracle that he's seen," his brother Peter told The Irish News.

"He told us the injuries Johnny sustained were some of the worst he'd ever seen.

"It's maybe a bit too early to know the full extent of his injuries.

"We are still taking it a day at a time. But he's been giving the thumbs-up signs and every hour he is getting strong.

"To be told so many times he might not make it or he may not have any level of brain activity and now to know that he's got some fighting chance is absolutely amazing."
