Cork GAA has apologised to referee Padraig Hughes for suggesting that his decision to award Kerry a late penalty in the drawn Munster SFC final cost them an All-Ireland semi-final place.

In an extraordinary statement issued in the aftermath of the Rebels' dismal championship exit at the hands of Kildare, the county board executive claimed that the decision was "totally wrong" and pointed the finger of blame firmly in the Armagh match official's direction.

"The tremendous performance of the team in the drawn Munster final has been widely acknowledged, and it is quite probable that but for a totally wrong refereeing decision in that game, Cork would now be in an All-Ireland semi-final," it read.

According to the Irish Independent, Cork sent a letter of apology to Hughes last weekend.

The main purpose of the statement was to acknowledge the efforts of departing manager Brian Cuthbert who the executive claimed, had come in for "regular, unjustified and personalised abusive criticism from certain elements of the media."
