The GAA are planning to introduce a standardised sliotar in hurling by 2017.
And The Irish Sun reports that the sliotar will have a microchip that can send a signal to ensure all cores are exactly the same - reducing the chance of varying weights and differences between suppliers.
The microchip will not be used to determine scores.
The GAA's secretary of the Hurling Development Committee Pat Daly told SunSport: "There are 32 approved suppliers now.
"But currently you have no way of knowing that if what is being supplied is what was approved initially, unless you check every single ball, which is not practical.
"So by placing chips in the core it would allow us to know that it's a bone fine product.
"We are aiming to have it in place for 2017."
