Selector Gavin Devlin admits Tyrone have ground to make up on Donegal.
The Tir Chonaill men have dominated this fixture in recent years and were emphatic 1-13 to 0-6 winners when the sides last met in the Allianz League at the end of March.
"At the beginning of the league, we were hoping to have a few extra games to bring us much closer to May 17," Devlin told the Irish News ahead of Sunday week's eagerly-awaited Ulster SFC preliminary round clash.
"But it was very disappointing to get relegated and on the way to relegation we played Donegal in Ballybofey and on that day there was a gulf between us.
We just had no answer to them on the day, but it is up to use now to close the gap."
Asked how Tyrone would go about bridging the gap, Devlin added: "It's about the way we go about our work and implementing our team principles. We have been going really well in recent weeks and are looking forward to it."
