Antrim hurling has been plunged into mourning following the death of Jim Nelson last night.
A member of the St. Paul's club, Nelson famously guided the county to an All-Ireland SHC final appearance against Tipperary in 1989 after a sensational semi-final victory over Offaly.
Under Nelson's watch, the Saffrons could put it up to the leading hurling powers and they spent eight years in Division 1 of the National League. In 2012, he returned as Antrim manager on a temporary basis after Jerry Wallace stepped down from the role.
Earlier in the same year, he coached Loughgiel Shamrocks to an All-Ireland club final success at Coolderry's expense. Nelson received an award from the Ulster Council in 2009 in recognition of his contribution to hurling.
May he rest in peace.
