Burnout among young players highlighted in survey

Player burnout is not a myth. INPHO

A survey carried out by the GAA's Minor Review Work Group has found that player burnout continues to be a major concern within the Association.

The survey of inter-county minor players - details of which are published in today's Irish Independent - shows that 62 per cent of minors played games while carrying injuries, while 42 per cent had experienced "chronic fatigue".

It also discovered that 24 per cent of inter-county U18s had been actively involved in the GAA seven days a week, while 81 per cent said they had been asked to give up either football or hurling when they enjoyed playing both. A further 35 per cent felt they were over-trained.

The findings of the survey will be considered by Central Council and Congress. In their interim report, the Minor Review Work Group suggests that there is little concern being shown for the long-term welfare of teenage players.

The Group is proposing that no inter-county minor challenge matches be permitted, that each province uses the same format for its championships, that regional leagues replace provincial leagues and that second level college competitions do not start before the second week of October and be completed by St. Patrick's Day.
