All-Ireland winning captain Pat Donnellan joined his Clare team-mates on a flight to Cancun yesterday after getting engaged to Limerick lady Edel Leahy last month.

Donnellan and his new fiancee were part of an 80-strong group which departed Shannon Airport for a fortnight in the Mexican sun resort as a reward for their incredible achievements last season. The Banner's All-Ireland winning starting VX was notable for the fact that it didn't include any engaged or married player, although Fergal Lynch - who is married and has since retired from inter-county hurling - briefly appeared as a blood sub in the replay win over Cork.

O'Callaghan's Mills clubman Donnellan revealed to the Irish Daily Star that he went back to the scene of the All-Ireland success to pop the question to Edel.

"I booked a private tour of the Croke Park Skyline a week or so before Christmas. I got down on one knee up there… and thankfully it worked out well and she said yes."

The couple will start making their wedding plans when they return from the holiday. Tweet
