Queen's University manager Anthony McGrath hasn't a clue what Joe Kernan's mediator role will entail.

The Crossmaglen manager has been deployed to mediate between counties and universities ahead of this year's McKenna Cup but McGrath - whose team withdrew from the competition last January due to a dispute over the unavailability of players - is at a loss as to what exactly the Armagh man will be doing:

"We are hopeful about Joe Kernan's appointment but we don't know what his role entails," he admits in The Irish News. "We have no idea.

"All I know is - and this is what we have always stressed - there are rules there and we just hope that the county managers will respect them and that the Ulster Council will enforce them.

"If that is the case, then there are not going to be any issues.

"It is hard to know if there will be any Queen's players involved with county squads. There have been a few of our guys called in for meetings over the last few weeks and we definitely have a few around the fringes of squads.

"But, until counties name their McKenna Cup squads, we don't really know where we stand."
