Sligo footballer Tony Taylor has revealed that he is battling back from a serious illness.

Taylor headed to the States for the summer to play football in Boston, but while there the Eastern Harps clubman was struck down with a mystery illness that decimated his immune system.

The 29-year-old admitted to the Sligo Champion that at times he feared the worst as his family had to travel to the states to be at his hospital bedside.

However, Taylor has made a full recovery from the illness and hopes to be back on the pitch next year, but he admits that he is just grateful to have his health back.

"There were many dark days and nights when I feared the worst," stressed Taylor. "It was all very frightening. Even now, it's scary when I think of all I went through.

"Football is the motivation that I need to get back to full fitness. I'm determined to play for Sligo and the IT early in the New Year. If all I went through taught me anything it is that your health is your wealth."
