Parents keep promise to Kildare minor

Kildare minor captain Mark Sherry travels from Kilkenny to play football in his native county.

Sherry became the first Kildare minor captain to lift the Leinster minor Cup since 1991 following their win over Westmeath earlier this month.

Long distance travel is well known in GAA circles, especially for county players, but not as much so at minor level.

There is where Sherry is an exception to the cause as following his family's move to Thomastown in Kilkenny, Sherry continued to play for his club Two Mile House.

And so began the arduous task of ferrying the youngster to and from training, which has now increased due to his involvement with the Kildare minors.

However, Sherry revealed to the Kildare Nationalist that his parents were upholding a promise they made to him when the move to Kilkenny was first mooted and complete the two-hour round journey a few times a week.

"My Dad got a job down here nearly fives years ago so we moved down," said Sherry. "I travel up for every training session; I don't think I've missed one yet. My Dad wasn't mad into GAA before all this but now he is and so is my mother. My mother has always been at me to keep going.

"It's the one thing that they promised me when we moved down here, because there is no football down here really. They haven't let me down on that; they've brought me up for all training and games. Winning the Leinster was a bit of reward for them too."

This weekend, Sherry will lead Kildare out as they take on Roscommon in the All-Ireland minor football quarterfinal.
