Former Sligo sharpshooter Paul Taylor has appealed to the public to stop swimming at Strandhill beach.

Paul's younger brother Bobby drowned at the popular resort just days before he was due to celebrate his 18th birthday in 1998.

As the country continues to bask in glorious sunshine, the retired full forward said in the Sligo Champion: "Our lives were turned upside down when Bobby died. No family should have to go through that pain and grief.

"Strandhill is one of the most beautiful places in the world, but it is not safe for swimming. Bobby and his friends never thought that they would be the victims of a drowning tragedy. But everyone is at risk.

"There have been a lot of tragedies during the recent hot spell. And each one brings back the memories of our own tragedy. I would hate any family to go through what our family went through."
