Brolly condemns assault on Spillane

Pat Spillane has revealed he was assaulted by a group of Donegal fans as he made his way out of Croke Park after the Tir Chonaill men's All-Ireland football semi-final victory over Cork.

The outspoken media pundit did not report the incident to the gardai, despite receiving a number of 'belts' to the stomach. The assault has been condemned by Spillane's fellow RTE football analyst Joe Brolly, who described it as "scandalous", and by the chairman of the Donegal county board, PJ McGowan.

"Once the game was over, as I always do, I left Croke Park immediately because I have over a four-and-a-half hour journey ahead of me back to Kerry," Spillane explained to The Donegal Democrat.

"As I was headed out of Croke Park and walking up Clonliffe Road, there must have been 10,000 Donegal supporters on the road.

"Many of them were shouting at me and most of the comment was good-humoured banter. But I just kept my head down and carried on about my business before the next thing I knew was that a flag was dropped in front of me and I was surrounded by a number of supporters and I received a couple of belts to the stomach."

PJ McGowan has issued an apology to the Kerry legend on behalf of his county board.

"I'm really shocked to hear of the assault and I want to condemn it in the strongest possible way and I want to apologise to Pat on behalf of the decent and genuine Donegal supporters," the Donegal chairman said.
